THE BRIEF
Turn a joke from comedian Roman Tretyakov's live stand-up performance into an animated Reel.
THE CHALLENGE
Comedy depends on timing. The animation needed to follow the comedian's delivery without getting in the way of the joke.
I selected a moment from the performance, cleaned up the audio and began building a visual story around it.
THE VISUAL LANGUAGE
The joke takes place on the New York subway, so I drew inspiration from the city's rough, chaotic visual character.
Gritty textures, cut-out figures and an imperfect collage aesthetic gave the animation its own slightly absurd atmosphere.
FROM STAND-UP TO VISUAL STORY
The comedian's voice sets the pace, while the animation adds another layer to the joke.
The idea wasn't simply to illustrate what he was saying, but to take the humour somewhere the original performance couldn't.
